Carbon-free electricity

Find out the advantages of carbon-free electricity.

This is electricity supplied exclusively from sources that do not generate CO2 emissions. The use of those sources contributes to the prevention of climate change, reduces the carbon footprint and promotes the green transformation of society. Carbon-free sources include nuclear energy and the majority of renewable sources (solar, hydro, wind, geothermal energy, etc.).

The GEN-I Group facilitates the supply of electricity from carbon-free nuclear energy with no surcharge. In addition, we also wish to encourage the use of electricity from renewable energy sources. We therefore offer you the selection of electricity from 100% solar energy or 100% hydro energy for only € 1 a month. In this way, you yourself can promote the green transformation through concrete actions.

With the transition to an energy source that does no generate CO2 emissions, you protect our environment and help us in creating a green future for ourselves and for future generations. You won’t have to sacrifice any of your time for those efforts, as we will decarbonize your electricity consumption by discontinuing the use of fossil-based sources.

Our excellent performance in the past and the trust that we have built with you, our customers, and the electricity traders we do business with have resulted in sound business relationships within and outside the borders of Slovenia. On that basis, we have concluded contracts on the supply of exclusively CO2-free electricity. Through successful trading on the international markets, we will supply exclusively CO2-free electricity to all our customers, without problems.

The selection of the desired source of energy can be arranged on the Moj GEN-I portal, where in the ‘Settings’ section under the Metering points tab, you click on ‘Edit settings’ under the selected metering point and confirm your selection. We will begin supplying electricity from your selected source the following month.

The sun is the best and cleanest choice over the long term among all renewable energy sources. Special focus has thus been given to the sun, as we believe it to be the energy source of the future.

The CHP and RES contribution is set by the Ministry of Infrastructure and is calculated based on the decree governing this area. The purpose of the contribution is to provide government support for the production of electricity from renewable sources and from combined heat and power plants. As a supplier, we have no control over that item. All suppliers in the Republic of Slovenia are obliged to charge customers the same amount.

Due to numerous advantages, GEN-I strives to promote the production and consumption of solar energy. We therefore make it possible for you to choose energy produced exclusively from the sun. We wish to achieve the objective of a carbon-free society by 2050, meaning we must begin taking the right steps today.

Energy sources are evidenced by so-called guarantees of origin, which serve as a well-established and official mechanism in the EU. This is evidence that guarantees a given quantity of energy was produced from a specific source. Guarantees of origin are issued by the Energy Agency at the end of the year.

Electricity flows through power lines according to physical laws, and thus cannot be directed. The electricity market is based on the principle of the control of energy delivered to the network relative to energy drawn from the network. This means that GEN-I will supply a comparable quantity of electricity for every kWh of electricity consumed by our customers according the valid guarantee of origin system.

The guarantee of origin system is a closely regulated system that ensures that every known production is uniquely certified. The certificates can be traded freely throughout the EU. These certificates can only be
assigned once to a precisely-defined customer. Electricity from different sources, including fossil fuels, will flow through power lines until the full decarbonization of the Slovenian electricity sector. However, each step that is similar to ours will result in an increasing amount of electricity from cleaner sources.

Already in January 2021, the GEN-I Group purchased CO2-free electricity for 40% of Slovenian households who through their choice of 100% solar energy or carbon-free nuclear energy have joined us as part of the largest Slovenian initiative for the decarbonization of the country.

You, too, can contribute significantly to a cleaner environment and the reduction of the carbon footprint. If you have the possibility, you can contribute a great deal to the reduction of CO2 emissions by building a solar power plant for the self-sufficient supply of energy, by using a heat pump for heating, and by purchasing an electric vehicle instead of a vehicle with an internal combustion motor. All of the above-described measures require initial financial investments that in all cases result in a return over time.

You can also take small steps to ensure a cleaner environment:

  • opt for the supply of 100% solar energy. The surcharge is minimal, while your contribution to protecting the environment will be significant;
  • do errands, shop and make short journeys on foot, by bike or via public transport whenever possible;
  • choose energy efficient appliances and switch them off when they are not in use. Turn off lights when you don’t need them, and replace ordinary light bulbs with energy saving or LED light bulbs;
  • separate waste and recycle; avoid the use of plastic bags or rather use reusable bags, and thus reduce total waste; and
  • buy locally produced organic food, as such food contains the fewest pesticides and the amount of CO2 emission generated in transportation is minimal.
