You can save around 7% of energy per year by lowering your heating temperature by just 1°C. The average temperature in a home during the heating season is between 21°C and 22°C. If you lower your heating by just 1°C, you won’t feel a big difference in temperature. However, you will notice a significant difference in your consumption and your monthly bill. The lower the temperature, the more you can save. Of course, the savings will vary according to your circumstances (location, type of home, size, etc.).
If you leave the tap running for 3 minutes, you will use 15 litres of water. If you used just 1 minute less water by turning off the tap while soaping your hands and brushing your teeth, you would save 5 litres. And since we brush our teeth twice a day, the hot water savings are doubled. This could save you up to €27 per year. It takes a lot of energy to heat water, so don't let (too much) hot water go down the drain while you brush your teeth and soap your hands. This simple step will significantly reduce your consumption and lower your electricity bill. You will also be doing your bit for the environment.
Do you often forget to switch off electrical appliances when you’re not using them? They waste electricity and add to your bill. When we talk about vampire consumption, we are referring to devices and appliances that use energy even when they are not actively being used. A TV in standby mode uses 1 W, a laptop in sleep mode also uses 1 W, and a desktop computer uses up to 5 W. Since the devices and appliances are in this state all day, except when they are being used, this adds up to 20 hours a day. Switching off these appliances alone could save you around €7 a year. Think about which devices and appliances could be unplugged more often (air conditioners, tumble dryers, washing machines, computer equipment). Don’t forget chargers for mobile phones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, etc., which we like to leave plugged in after charging for convenience.
Estimated annual energy consumption of a typical household*
- Electricity consumption at higher and lower tariffs
Your electrical appliances (washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer) should run on the lower electricity tariff (weekdays from 22:00 to 6:00 and all day at weekends and during public holidays). Using appliances on a lower tariff will not reduce your electricity consumption per se, but it will reduce your monthly costs and help to relieve the pressure on the electricity network during periods of higher daily tariffs.
